From the ETUG Archives

A colleague recently shared thoughts around Artificial Intelligence and Indigenous knowledge, discussing issues around remediation between orality and digitally-generated AI output, and I remembered this excellent keynote made by Jennifer Wemigwans at the Spring ETUG 2021 workshop.

“A digital bundle is a very unique space. It’s a unique space on the internet because it is a knowledge bundle. Indigenous communities cherish and take care of knowledge bundles because it is understood that knowledge bundles are imbued with spirit and are therefore living entities that must be cared for. They are not such things as books but are items or collections that have been brought to life through ceremony and through the protocols of their communities. A digital bundle exists within the parametres of indigenous philosophy and values and therefore cannot utilize Western Internet theory because those technical concepts and conceptions do not apply.”
