I’m the Manager, Online Learning Strategy and Design at Vancouver Community College, where I help staff and faculty to select and use educational technologies effectively.
I fell into education and edtech specifically through my work as an archaeologist in the 1990s, excavating well-visited sites in Scotland, including Edinburgh and Stirling Castles, and Melrose Abbey. However, I was spectacularly bad at fieldwork and found myself promoted/relegated to documenting and reporting on the finds, creating public facing educational materials about the dig and so on – all of which required familiarity and engagement with edtech. I completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Multimedia Technology soon after and began work as an educational content developer with Heriot-Watt University. After moving to Canada in 2006 I worked for BC Children’s and Women’s Hospitals as eLearning Manager, before moving to VCC at the start of 2019. I completed my Masters in Educational Technology (UBC) in 2024.
When I’m not working, I spend my time riding my pretentious British folding bike, playing guitar and accordion (not at the same time) and singing tenor in the Vancouver Gaelic Choir.
